What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is used to assess, diagnose, treat or work to prevent disability and disease. Physios are specialists in movement and function and work with patients to assist them to overcome movement disorders, whether they are caused by accident or injury, ageing or illness, or have been present since birth. Physiotherapy can assist in the recovery from injuries, and can also reduce pain and stiffness as well as improving mobility. Physios can also help to prevent further injuries by working with you to design a treatment plan tailored to your individual condition and needs. A doctor’s referral is not needed to see a physiotherapist, although doctors often do refer their patients when necessary, and physios often work as part of a team with other healthcare providers to manage specific conditions.

What treatments do physiotherapists use?

Physios use a range of different treatments, dependent on your individual needs. These treatments can include: manipulation and mobilisation of the joints to reduce pain and stiffness, muscle re-education to improve control, soft tissue mobilisation (massage), breathing exercises and airway clearing techniques, exercise programs, hydrotherapy, and dry needling, as well as assistance with braces and mobility aids.
