Pilates Overview

At Physio Alive, Pilates is an important part of our holistic approach to injuries, illness and overall fitness. At McLaren Vale our purpose-built “Gill Lightfoot Pilates Studio” has been designed to offer a tailored space for both mat and equipment clinical Pilates, featuring three reformers, and a trapeze table as well as offering cardio and weight equipment. Our Aldinga clinic also features a dedicated space for classes and 1:1 clinical Pilates sessions, offering reformers and a trapeze table for equipment classes, along with ample room for mat classes.

History

The Pilates method of exercise was developed initially by German born Joseph Pilates (pronounced pil-ah-tees) in the 1920’s. First used primarily for dancers as a body building exercise program, it was used by some of the world’s best known performers for many years. Over the last decade, the general principles have been refined and modified by the medical community. It is now extensively utilised in the rehabilitation setting as well as for injury prevention.

Pilates Principles
The Pilates-based exercise program combines current concepts of core stabilisation (giving trunk stability) with whole body “functional” movements. Rather than repeating isolated muscle contractions as in the typical gym setting, Pilates uses specific coordinated body movements with postural control. These facilitate the correct pattern and timing of different muscle groups in combination with one another. This results in whole body “functional fitness”, which improves day-to-day movement efficiency and awareness and minimises the risk of injury.Pilates Seaford

Pilates Equipment
We utilise Pilates principles of correct muscle activation and postural control for mat exercises, ball exercises and foam roller exercises. We also own specific Pilates equipment which has been modified for use in the rehabilitation setting. The equipment includes a Trapeze table and two Reformers. The trapeze table is a stable base for different exercises in standing, sitting or lying using springs and supports. The reformer is a mobile base, which promotes stability by challenging balance reactions.

How is Clinical Pilates different to other forms of Pilates?
Clinical Pilates is Pilates- based exercise which is prescribed and supervised by a trained physiotherapist. Clinical Pilates uses specific exercises which are tailored to your individual needs, rather than giving general exercises that may or may not benefit your unique body make up. Much attention is given to correct technique, with sessions either given individually or in small groups. Indications for use
A Clinical Pilates program may be used as an alternative to gym-based exercises or other forms of exercise for the average healthy person. It provides an excellent overall health and fitness program for the general population. Clinical Pilates may also be used for specific injury rehabilitation. Virtually any injury may be treated in this way—including any musculo-skeletal injury, balance problems, pelvic floor weakness/lower abdominal weakness. It is particularly suited to neck and back problems, which rely on tonic strength and control of the postural muscles such as transversus abdominis and multifidus and the deep neck flexors for long-term improvement and avoidance of future problems.
